As a chick who pays her rent and goes on trips, I like to only travel with intention AND style. This is why it is so important to post this with care and to uplift the beautiful island known as Jamaica. Jamaica is a beautiful representation of resilience, beauty, grace, and joy, and it would be a mistake to not uplift Jamaica through education and calls to action. I invite us all to not be colonial travelers looking for others to cater to us and our standards, but to be communal travelers who share space and time with respect to others. But to share space with Jamaicans, we must know their history.

Montego Bay, Jamaica: A Brief History

Montego Bay, the second-largest city in Jamaica, has a rich and diverse history. It was originally inhabited by the Taino people before being attacked and displaced by the Spanish in the early 16th century. The name "Montego" is believed to come from the Spanish word "manteca," meaning lard, referencing the large quantities of lard produced in the area from wild hogs. In 1655, the English captured Jamaica, and Montego Bay developed into a port for sugar production supported by African enslavement and trade. One great cultural staple of Jamaica’s history is the delicious “Jerk Chicken”, originating from the Maroons, runaway enslaved Africans that formed communities in the mountains. They developed the unique jerk seasoning and cooking method as both a means of preserving meat and a symbol of resistance against colonial oppression. This resilience and skills are still reflected in business owners supporting themselves and their communities through multitudes of businesses that travelers can patronize.

It is amazing to visit all the beautiful experiences and land Jamaica has, but tragically Jamaicans have limited access to their own land.

In Jamaica, most beaches are public, but many of the most desirable stretches are controlled by resorts or private entities, limiting access for locals and non-guests. Some beaches allow public access for a fee, further restricting the experience of natural beauty for many natives. It's essential to support efforts that promote equitable access to these natural resources and respect the rights and heritage of the local population. Also, I have seen a trend where travelers sponsor their concierge or driver to participate in the experiences that they are traveling to. You would be surprised how many natives have not even experienced tourist staples in their area due to pay barriers. But oh, that’s definitely a “if you got it like that” suggestion lol, definitely not expected. Now, let’s get into the top activities in Montego Bay, sans the plantation-centered institutions that have and continue to exploit the natives of Jamaica.

Top Activities in Montego Bay

1. Dunn’s River Falls: Located a short drive from Montego Bay, Dunn’s River Falls is one of Jamaica's most famous natural attractions. Visitors can climb the terraced falls, swim in the natural pools, and enjoy the lush surrounding forest. They take pictures on your phone and their camera, and the guides are amazing. This is a physically active and adrenaline pumping activity. 10/10 experience. Be sure to bring water shoes, a waterproof phone case, and leave the nonessentials on the bus!

4. Usain Bolt's Tracks & Records: This lively restaurant and sports bar in Montego Bay celebrates the legacy of Jamaica's legendary sprinter, Usain Bolt. Guests can enjoy a diverse menu featuring Jamaican and international cuisine, live music performances, and numerous large screens for watching sports events. The decor showcases Bolt's memorabilia, including his racing spikes and medals, creating a unique dining atmosphere. Additionally, interactive games like foosball and video games add an element of fun, making it an enjoyable destination for families and friends.

3. Lounge 2727: This chic lounge offers a blend of local and international cuisine, live music, and a vibrant atmosphere. It's an excellent place to experience local culture in a relaxed setting. They have marijuana for legal sale and a great patio to smoke, eat, and enjoy the beautiful ocean view. Be sure to tip generously to support the local staff.

5. Jamaica's Bamboo River Ride: Near Montego Bay, this serene bamboo river ride offers a tranquil journey along lush rivers aboard handcrafted bamboo rafts. Guided by local raftsmen, you'll enjoy scenic views of verdant forests and exotic wildlife, with opportunities for nature photography and learning about the cultural significance of rafting in Jamaican heritage. Some tours include stops for refreshing swims and sampling local snacks from riverside vendors, making it a peaceful and immersive way to experience Jamaica's natural beauty and support local communities.

2. Chukka Caribbean Adventures: Offering a range of eco-friendly adventures, Chukka Caribbean Adventures provides experiences like zip-lining, river tubing, and ATV tours. These activities allow visitors to explore Jamaica’s natural beauty while supporting sustainable tourism practices. The guides are native and super fun. I rode an ATV, rode a horse, enjoyed their infinity pool, had a complimentary ear, and rode along the river in a bamboo raft! It was amazing 10/10.
